President Peter Mutharika on Thursday lashed out at donors saying they should refrain from commenting on the country’s internal political matters because “they are guests and not citizens of Malawi”
Western donors offer Malawi a life line offering support to different sectors, crucial to the country’s development.

But just like his elder brother, Bingu wa Mutharika, the President believes that the assistance does not mean they have the carte blanche to get involved in Malawi’s internal politics.
“Don’t interfere in the politics of this country…You are guests of this country, you are not citizens,” a visibly annoyed Mutharika said.
He was speaking in the northern city of Mzuzu where he is to celebrate 54 years of independence on Friday.
This is a sovereign issue, Mutharika charged, it is foreigners who are confusing this country and they have to stop that.
“I will not allow that in as long as I am alive this country to be neo-colonized,” he said.
The President was apparently responding to the comments made by the EU Ambassador Marchel Germann and US Ambassador Virginia Palmer on the leaked ACB report.
The two diplomats called for an independent probe into the fraud at the Malawi Police Service in which Mutharika is being implicated.
“I know how the money is moving around, I am not stupid! I know what I am doing. Some of the people have revolted against me within the party for the love of money, I call on everyone to respect this,” he added.
The last few days Mutharika has been defensive as he tries to distant himself from the alleged fraud at police headquarters. A few days ago, he told Reuters News Agency that the ACB report was “fake news”
Mutharika is in the northern region for the next two weeks where among other things he will preside over independence celebrations at Mzuzu Stadium on Friday.
