An 18-year-old woman has been killed in a suspected rape attack close to the boundary of Chikwawa and Thyolo districts.

Chikwawa Police spokesperson, Foster Benjamin, identified the deceased as Cecilia Mushakala of Solomon Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mphuka in Thyolo.

He said the deceased was found dead in a bush at Wizalama Village close to Maperera Trading Centre in Chikwawa on Tuesday last week.

Benjamin said the deceased is believed to have been murdered in the wee hours of Tuesday.

“On the fateful day, the deceased left home for Maperera Trading Centre to sell tomatoes. She was ambushed and dragged into the bush where she was raped before being gagged to death,” Benjamin said.

He said police officers from Chikwawa Police Station and medical personnel from Maperera Health Centre rushed to the scene to collect the body.

It was later established that death was caused due to suffocation and a manhunt for the assailants is currently underway.

In another development, police at Nselema in Machinga have arrested a 30-year-old woman for allegedly concealing the birth of a child. Machinga Police spokesperson, Davie Sulumba, identified the suspect as Patuma Lyson of Mchika Village, T/A Nyambi in the district.

Sulumba said on Tuesday last week, a baby was heard crying from a nearby garden and a woman went to check and found a newly born baby.

“The matter was reported to Nselema Police Unit and the baby was rushed to Nyambi Health Centre for further assessment and care,” Sulumba said.

He said police instituted investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect who admitted dumping the baby in the garden.

The suspect will appear in court to answer charges of concealing the birth of a child.
