Nine children are kept at Phalombe Police Station after they were rescued over the weekend upon being intercepted at Makhanamba Village while on their way to Mozambique.

According to Eye of the Child, many Malawian children are being recruited to work on farms in Mozambique.

Phalombe police publicist Innocent Moses has said the children were from Mulanje and are currently at the station waiting to be transferred to Mulanje.

“We received a tip from a well-wisher who is a child protection officer in Makhanamba Village that he rescued the nine children who were heading to Mozambique to work, mainly on tobacco fields. We have since managed to rescue them,” he said.

According to Moses, seven of the children were below 18 years.

“The youngest is about 12 years and it is believed that two of them aged 18 were the ones who encouraged the others to go there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Eye of the Child Executive Director, Maxwell Matewere, has said since many children are being trafficked to Mozambique, there is need for the government to set aside measures to curb the malpractice.
