The Rotary Club of Lilongwe has said there is need to inculcate a culture of professionalism and leadership in young people.

The club’s president, Dan Kuwali, made the remarks in Lilongwe on Friday during a charter dinner for Bambino Private School Interact Club.

Kuwali said the launch of the club is a fulfilment of one of the goals they had in the rotary year.

“The club we chose is Bambino Private School. If you are joining rotary, you need to be more than 30 years old. But we still need to [plan for] continuity. Therefore, we focused on trying to inculcate a culture of professionalism and leadership in the young ones,” Kuwali said.

Interact clubs bring together young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years with the aim of developing their leadership skills “while discovering the power of service above self”.

Founder of Hope for Cancer Foundation and Think Pink Malawi, Blandina Khondowe, said it is important to inculcate a culture of service in young people.

“It is important to instill such values in young people because we always hear that and we know it’s a fact that the youngsters are the future. It is always important to do that when they are young so that it becomes a habit,” Khondowe said.

President of Bambino Interact Club, Kelvin Murray, said they will do more in serving the community.

“It is really great to have this club at our school. I am really excited. At our school we do service. Now we are looking forward to serve the community at a higher level. This is like a motivation to us. It is encouraging us to continue serving,” he said.

During the ceremony, members of the school’s club were inducted.
