The writing is on the wall that Be Forward Wanderers’ family is facing a traumatic and painful period.
The team has lost two games on the roll, having being beaten by Red Lions 1-0 in a TNM Super League encounter and age-old rivals Nyasa Big Bullets in the Airtel Top 8 semi-final.
It is obvious that when a club is going through such a bad patch there are so many issues that come out from the team’s supporters.
There is always a blame-game between the Executive Committee and the Supporters Committee over such a poor form.
It becomes like a fashion by some wayward supporters to accuse the Executive Committee, to make matters worse in the media, of financial abuses without any evidence.
It is unfair for the supporters to accuse the newly-elected Executive Committee of financial mismanagement when they have not even checked the books of the club.
This week, Wanderers Executive Committee explained how the team’s wage bill weighs down its coffers.
If you read the statement, which was signed by the team’s Treasurer Robert Mbedza and Chairperson Gift Mkandawire, you can easily tell that they are trying to be honest with their expenditures.
Despite that their sponsorship was hiked to K153 million, the club’s expenses are higher considering that they pay their players and technical staff higher salaries. Possibly this is the mistake Wanderers made.
It is a fact that the Executive Committee has just inherited the club which was swimming in financial problems after the demise of its chairperson George Chamangwana last year.
That coupled with the closure of Kamuzu Stadium, which is proximal to its club house, the club is digging deeper into its pocket to fulfill fixtures.
This Executive Committee has an arduous task to manage the transition.
This committee needs to be given time to restructure the club’s operations instead of putting them under unnecessary pressure.
There are so many challenges the committee needs to deal with before settling down. And for someone to accuse them of incompetence after they have been in the office for less than four months, smacks of irresponsibility and sick attitude.
I sense something utterly sinister in these statements.
Wanderers’ supporters must learn to support their club financially than making senseless noise.
They should learn to participate in money-spinning promotions like SMS campaign which can turn around the financial fortune of the club if well patronised.
It is ridiculous for the supporters to be benefitting from the club instead of giving to the team.
However, the committee should appreciate that football is an emotive game and supporters lack patience. They would rarely give them a chance to acclimatise to the new terrain because all what they need are instant results.
Wanderers’ Executive Committee needs to make proper restructuring without delay to save the club from the financial quagmire.
