Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) will dispatch four athletes to Nigeria for the Africa Championship scheduled for August 1 to 16.
Outstanding athletes from that Nigeria event will qualify for Inter-Continental Championship set for the Czech Republic in September.
AAM General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said they have resolved to sponsor the athletes’ trip using a grant from the government as they were racing against time.
“We don’t have funds and this is why we will use our annual allocation. We could have loved if well-wishers had joined hands with the government, through Sports Council, to sponsor us,” he said.
AAM has a quota of eight athletes for the Nigeria race but Chitembeya said they can only raise over K1 million which will be enough to fly out two athletes.
“The organisers are willing to fund two athletes and we can raise money for two athletes, meaning that we will send four. But if we secure more funding, we will be able to send more athletes to match our allocation of eight,” he said.
AAM has resolved to use its annual allocation to fund a national track and field championship on July 7 so as to select athletes for the race in Nigeria.
