The Chilima Movement, which is spearheading Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s candidature in the May 21 2019 presidential election, has started garnering support for the veep among University of Malawi (Unima) students.
Leaders of the movement met students from various constituent colleges of Unima in Blantyre over the weekend, when they disseminated information about the movement’s vision.
The movement is gathering momentum but Chilima himself is yet to come out clear on his political future despite hinting that he may have a go at the presidency in the national elections.
Speaking to journalists during the meeting, Madalitso Kamaliza, interim general secretary for the Chilima Movement [responsible for Blantyre and surrounding districts], said support for Chilima among youths is growing.
“Many Malawians, especially the youth, are tired of the state of affairs and want change. As such, we believe that Chilima has demonstrated that he is the right candidate to bring about such change to the Malawi society,” Kamaliza said.
Kamaliza said, instead of giving youths free beer, Chilima has a good vision for the country.
“Our intention is not to give them [students] beer but to share our vision for the country’s future which also lies in students’ hands,” he said.
Speaking later, Daston Bulawula, who is chairperson representing all colleges in the Chilima Movement, said the students believe that Chilima could be the solution to various challenges facing the students while pursuing their education and after finishing school.
“Chilima is a person who has demonstrated hard work in him; he worked his way to the top. He is not someone who was given things or position on a silver platter, so we believe he is someone who will inspire hard work among Malawians,” Bulawula said.
Blantyre City South parliamentarian, Allan Ngumuya, was among the notable officials at the gathering.
