Battle of rookies

The so-called domestic football heavyweights are not in action this afternoon but a TNM Super League first-round meeting between hosts, Karonga United and T.N Stars, should be enough to keep conversation rolling in the Northern Region border district.

Both teams are rookies who are mindful of securing their survival in the top-flight league; hence, losing this game would be suicidal.

Stars, who stunned Civo Sporting Club 5-2 then held Kamuzu Barracks 1-1 in the last two consecutive weeks, lie on an impressive 10th place with 11 points from nine games on the log table.

The Meke Mwase side from Kasungu District is at par on points with the eighth-positioned Karonga.

Stars can always bank on the ever improving efficiency of striker China Chirwa while being assured on towering left-back Ian Chinyama’s leadership and overlapping service.

To protect home territory, Karonga who are smarting from a 1-0 away loss to Dwangwa United last Sunday, must tighten it at the back and be fluent upfront.

During last weekend’s outing that yielded just one point after a 2-2 draw against Mafco last Saturday; Karonga’s camp was hit by reports of indiscipline by some players such as defender Peter Mselema.

Having been dropped from last Sunday’s game against Dwangwa, Mselema is expected to return to the starting line up; an opportunity for him to show his remorse on the field of play.

In another match today, Nchalo United welcome Red Lions, who stunned holders Be Forward Wanderers 1-0 last Sunday, at Kalulu Stadium whereas 2016 champions, Kamuzu Barracks, travel to Kasungu Stadium to play Dwangwa.

A win can see the third-placed Lions, who have 15 points from nine games, go temporarily on second place to displace Silver Strikers who have 16 points from seven games.

Nyasa Big Bullets lead the standings with 21 points from nine games but they are not in league action this weekend.

Silver can reclaim their spot with a win over unpredictable Tigers tomorrow. Prepare for battle.
