As the World Cup opening ceremony will be roaring into life at the gigantic Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia a number of local pubs in Malawi will take the fans closer to Moscow by beaming the games live.
Forget about the usual blackouts that might prevent fans from catching the action, most pubs The Daily Times visited have stand-by generators knowing well that this is the right time to provide the fans with some entertainment while maximising the profits too.
Embracing this global event, a lot of clubs have been refurnished in readiness for the World Cup. Topping the list is the Cockpit Lounge in Lilongwe, which will wear a new look as the World Cup kicks off.
Cockpit Lounge’s Commercial Director, Martin Nkasala said patrons would enjoy action from the giant screens.
“We wanted to change the look of the lounge to meet our patrons’ expectations. Football is enjoyed by a lot of people and, realising the challenges that some people might face to watch live action, we guarantee them that all matches will be beamed live,” he said.
Away from the glitz and glamour of pubs in the mode of Cockpit Lounge, the feeling is the same in Ndirande Township.
One pub owner Liston Gama revealed that the World Cup is a huge opportunity to make more sales.
“Due to the blackouts, a lot of people enjoy watching football in the pubs. We have invested in generators because we know the World Cup is a boost to our business, people drink a lot when they are watching football,” said.
Anticipating high demand, new pubs and clubs have also been opened to provide customers with a complete pack of entertainment. One of such clubs is Montys Soul Club in Chileka operated by Andrew Mbalati.
“It is an exclusive club for those above 30 years. To give customers a different experience, there will be a Break Dance competition and the winners will receive different prizes. Football and entertainment go together [and] that is why we are looking forward to the World Cup,” he said
