Fire gutted part of Zomba Flea Market in the wee hours of Tuesday.
A witness, Jonathan Sambani, said the fire was spotted at around 4am.
Both Zomba City Council acting Principal Fire Brigade Officer Lodious Sendaluzi, and Zomba Police spokesperson Patricia Sipliano confirmed the development but could not be drawn to comment on how much has been lost in the fire.
“We, as police, can confirm that we got a report of fire but it is our friends at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi that can address the issue of the main cause of the fire,” she said.
On his part, Sendaluzi said: “We are suspecting that the fire started due to an electric fault but we cannot say much at the moment.”
Business stalled during the early hours of yesterday, as investigators were on the ground until 11am.
