Malawi national football team Head Coach, Ronny van Geneugden, has said his charges lost 1-0 to Mauritius because they conceded too early and too cheaply in Monday’s Cosafa Castle Cup match at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa.
“I am very disappointed with the result. It was not all that good. It was their game plan that ‘let us be organised and play on the counterattack’. It is a pity that the many chances we created could not result in a goal,” Geneugden said.
The Flames succumbed to Damien Balisson’s 14th minute goal in Polokwane, South Africa, in their Group B opening match.
They dominated possession and created many chances but finishing was a big let-down due to hurried play.
Malawi anchor the group with no point whereas Mauritius are second behind leaders Botswana on goal difference with three points, following their 2-1 beating of Angola at the same Polokwane City venue in an earlier kick-off.
The Flames date Botswana today at Seshego Stadium followed by a meeting against Angola on Friday.
Malawi have never won the Cosafa Castle Cup but reached the final in 2002 and 2003.
Zimbabwe are five-time record holders and defending champions.
