Be Forward Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, has advised his players against overconfidence on the premise that they are the TNM Super League defending champions.
Speaking after losing 2-0 to Tigers FC on Tuesday at Mulanje Park Stadium, Osman said it was high time his charges realised that they are not invincible.
“We should realise that we can also lose. The fact that we are the champions does not make us unbeatable. Even champions lose but we seem to be carrying the glory of being champions.
“To defend the league, we should play better than last season. And this game should be a wakeup call for us,” Osman said.
Wanderers, who are on position six with seven points from four games, have been struggling to score in recent games. Wanderers have scored three league goals and conceded the same number of goals.
Osman said if a team cannot score, it should be able to defend; a thing that is lacking at Wanderers.
“Apart from Peter Wadabwa, we don’t have strikers who are fit enough to do the job, so we are putting too much responsibility on him. We have midfielders who are capable of scoring. But that should not be an excuse. If we have a problem with scoring, at least, we should be able to defend,” Osman said.
A Wanderers player refused to comment on Osman’s remarks, saying they signed a code of ethics that restricts them from granting the media interviews.
Tigers, who are without a coach since last season’s departure of Patrick Kulemeka and amid financial challenges, have assembled a good squad that is performing wonders.
The Kau Kau top the league’s log table with 10 points and are undefeated in four games.
Tigers’ caretaker Coach, Chikaiko Bridge, attributed the team’s impressive displays to his belief in young players.
