Seasoned golfer Geoffrey Kondwani was crowned champion of Umodzi Park monthly mug championship held at Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday.
Kondwani finished the competition with 87 gross followed by Charles Mvula on 83 gross. For winning the tournament, Kondwani received accommodation for two including dinner at Umodzi Park.
In his victory speech, Kondwani expressed gratitude to Umodzi Park for hosting the tournament.
“I was determined to win the contest. It was not easy because I competed against good golfers but I am happy that I finished as the champion,” he said.
Blossoming golfer Christopher Mzokomera won the longest drive whereas Gift Landisi won the nearest to pin.
In the ladies category, Tigist Michael won the competition with 95 gross followed by Regina Mwanza.
Michael also hailed Umodzi Park for staging what she described as a ‘wonderful tournament’.
“It was one of the best golf tournaments and I really enjoyed it,” she said.
Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony, Umodzi Park Complex General Manager, David Church, said he was satisfied with the huge turnout of golfers.
“The turnout has been absolutely awesome. We did not expect to have a pool of prominent golfers and the level of the competition in this tournament was also excellent.
“Golf is one of the most-loved sport codes in the world so we want to be part of the development of the game in Malawi. For this reason, we will continue sponsoring the tournament,” Church said.
He also disclosed plans of hosting a golf tour in June or July in conjunction with the Professional Golfers Association of Malawi.
