The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Blantyre Wednesday elected Farmers Union of Malawi (Fum) Chief Executive Officer, Prince Kapondamgaga, as its new president.
Kapondamgaga takes over from Karl Chokhotho, who has been at the helm of the private sector mouthpiece in the last two years.
Kapondamgaga takes over the leadership of the chamber at a time the business environment remains challenging, riddled by frequent power outages.
In an interview on the sidelines of the AGM, Kapondamgaga admitted that the operating environment is far from being ideal.
“I am aware that I assume this role at a time the business environment is characteristically hostile, highlighted by perennial blackouts, with no end in sight. However, it is my conviction that, with more and more pressure for private sector participation in the energy sector, the private sector should see light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
Kapondamgaga further said when the authorities are listening but not acting, chambers of commerce must become flexible and agile enough to change their offerings to meet the needs of a shifting environment.
“We have reached that point now. That is why our strategic plan has reoriented the direction of the chamber without changing its essence. Going forward, Small and Medium-sized enterprises will be given special focus,” he said.
Kapondamgaga is to be deputised by Business Computer Services Managing Director, James Chimwaza.
The AGM also elected Wilson Chirwa, Don Whayo, Felix Mlusu, Anold Shaba and Matthews Chikankheni to serve as trustees.
