Mum elections end this year

Elections for the national executive of the Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) will be held end this year.

Mum President, Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango, confirmed yesterday but could not come out clear on the date.

“Our four-year term of office ends this year and the elections are on. We have a planning meeting next month and we will announce the dates for the Annual General Meeting (AGM),” Mhango said.

Some musicians have, however, started the campaign ahead of the elections as they seek to be part of the national executive.

Several other players have also expressed interest to contest for presidency.

Mhango said he was still consulting as to whether he would stand again for presidency.

“I am still eligible to stand again for presidency but I have not yet decided. I will announce my position later since I am still consulting and also making an assessment first and, above all, praying about it,” Reverend Mhango said.

He said he has served one term as a unionist and another term when the body was an association.

Mhango took over the leadership of Mum, from Costen Mapemba, when the body was still an association.

Meanwhile Mhango has said the national executive still has a lot to do before the elections.

“We still have a lot of programmes to work on and I am happy that we have achieved a lot during the four year period,” he said.
