Winnie is no more

Winne Madikizela-Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon and former wife to Nelson Mandela, has died.
“It’s with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizile Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg…,” reads a statement from the family.
She died after a long illness for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of this year.
“She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones,” said the statement.
Born on Sept. 26, 1936, in Bizana, Eastern Cape province, Madikizela-Mandela became politicized at an early age in her job as a hospital social worker.
