Seven people died and five others were injured in a road accident at Elephant Rock in Mzimba District yesterday.
Mzimba Police spokesperson, Peter Botha, said the accident involved a motor vehicle, registration number NA 7605/LA 1281, which was being driven by Gift Magolosa.
He said the freightliner, which was carrying bags of fertiliser, was coming from Lilongwe to Mzuzu.
“While descending a slope at Elephant Rock, the driver failed to negotiate a corner as the vehicle was speeding. The vehicle swerved and plunged into a ditch,” Botha said.
Botha said, following the impact, seven people, who were yet to be identified, were referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
