For some time, it has been reported that there are some wrangles involving Malawians and Mozambican authorities at Makanjira in Mangochi, which borders Mozambique.
A lot has been said about the issue but nothing serious has been done from the government side. We earlier reported that some Malawians were being harassed and when the government was asked what is was doing about it, all we were told was that the issue was not that serious.
Yesterday, it had been reported that people who are believed to be security personnel of Mozambique shot one man dead and injured another. This is bad news that should not be taken lightly.
Border wrangles are serious issues just like they are sensitive. We would like to appeal to the governments of Malawi and Mozambique to intervene in the matter quickly, albeit with sobriety.
In a situation where people have started being killed, there is potential that, if not controlled quickly, this might turn to something more tragic than it is now.
While the government would be dealing with the issue diplomatically, we believe that our people at Makanjira need to be protected and the government must do this with speed.
Malawi and Mozambique have been good neighbours for years and when one is pressed, the other has come in to help. So many Malawians are living in Mozambique just as many Mozambicans have found a home in Malawi.
To say without thinking twice, Malawians and Mozambicans have lived in harmony and, in some border districts it is even difficult to identify who a Malawian or a Mozambican is.
That said, we appeal for reason in this issue and that the government of Malawi must quickly come in to protect its people while dealing with the issue at a higher diplomatic level
