Blantyre Cycl ing Club’s (BCC) three cyclists won all categories for this year’s Tour de Dwangwa Cycling Race at Dwangwa on Sunday.

Zomba-based Steven Nazombe grabbed first position in professional men’s drop-hand category whereas Violet Mwanza won the ladies’ mountain bicycle category.

Missi Kathumba also from BCC triumphed in the men’s professional category.

The 90-kilometre race started from Kande in Nkhatabay to Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa.

Nazombe, who has won the competition a record four times, attributed his latest feat to good preparations.

“Last year, I finished on third position. But this year, I engaged an extra gear in my preparations, hence the victory,” said Nazombe who received K120,000 and a TNM dongle.

The competition, which attracted 200 male and female cyclists, is used as a fundraising activity by organisers, Dwangwa Round Table 69. Proceeds from the race support surrounding communities.

Mayamiko Malenga, who chaired the competition’s organising committee, said this year’s race was a success.

“We are happy that a lot of cyclists took part in the competition. The turnout was good and even the prizes that were presented to the winners were good. We hope that the competition will be back next year,” Malenga said.

Illovo General Manager, Lai Bachan, who was the guest of honour, said he was happy that funds realised from the competition would be used to transform lives of the needy around Dwangwa.

Several companies sponsored the race with TNM being the main sponsors after pumping in K1.4 million.
