Malawi Congress Party President, Lazarus Chakwera, Wednesday visited Area 18 residents to appreciate the challenges they face since the contamination water scandal in mid-July.
His visit follows several interventions that have been taking place by authorities in the area.
Speaking after he toured the affected houses, Chakwera consoled the residents and encouraged them to take all authorities to task until the challenges have been solved.
Chakwera said the saga is but a tip of an iceberg, adding that time has come for the government to look at the drainage system in all the cities as they have outlived their lifespan.
“It’s time for government to invest in the drainage infrastructure in the country because this might happen in other areas as well,” Chakwera said.
Speaking during the visit, Chairperson of Area 18 residents, Leonard Phiri, said almost 90 percent of the people in the affected area are now out of danger but they are still traumatised; hence, they cannot trust tap water.
According to Phiri, they are proceeding to take the authorities to court and about 25 lawyers have teamed up to see how they can help them to seek justice.
Residents in over 150 households reportedly developed sicknesses, particularly diarrhoea which is blamed on the water contamination.
