FMB has pledged continued support to Leslie Seven National Rugby Championship.
FMB has been sponsoring the tournament for six years, resulting in indigenous players emerging through the programme.
FMB Head of Marketing FMB Head of Marketing, Sylvia Mataka, made the pledge in reaction to last week’s national finals held at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).
“We are more than impressed by the fact that in the six years we have been bankrolling the league; the rewards are actually there. We have
seen teams performing well and some local players have emerged through the structures. So, to answer your question, we will continue supporting rugby,” she said.
The tournament’s organiser, Graham Staines, said they were happy with
the progress of the competition.
During the national finals, BSC Juniors won the championship after beating Lilongwe Regional Team 19-10.
The championship was full of surprises as defending champions, BSC A and hot title contenders, Lilongwe Rugby Club, failed to reach the final.
In the semi-finals, BSC-A suffered a 22-19 shock loss to LRT, which is made up Central Region development players.
That was not the only shocking result as LRC lost to BSC Juniors, Ndirande and Luchenza.
BSC Juniors’ Captain, Chris Gaunt, said it was an historic win.
In a third-place encounter, BSC-A beat Ndirande Impala 17–12 while
Luchenza Red Ants finished fifth following a 12-7 triumph over Limbe Jaguars.
