Football returns to MDC Stadium

After many years, top-flight football is expected to return to MDC Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday, albeit by default.

The Chilomoni Township facility will host a TNM Super League first round game between Azam Tigers and Blantyre United.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Fixtures Secretary, Patrick Chisale, Tuesday announced that Kalulu Stadium, which was supposed to host the match, has been booked for other activities.

However, it is unclear if the match marks the opening of the facility to more high-profile games.

Football Association of Malawi General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, whose association owns the facility, hinted last month that the stadium might be open to competitive games.

The stadium was, until last season, home to Surestream Academy which closed shop. The academy was the genesis of Premier Bet Wizards.

The then owners were reluctant to accommodate high-profile games at the stadium in fear of vandalism.

Previously, the facility was the hunting ground for MDC United, now defunct. The availability of the stadium could offer a glimmer of home to Southern Region match-starved teams
