More aspirants for Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) Executive Committee positions have emerged ahead of Saturday’s elections set for Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.
However, most aspirants are playing it safe through underground campaign while waiting for Nam to release the official list of the candidates. The list is expected to be released Thursday.
The aspirants had until Wednesday to apply for positions of President, vice-president, general secretary (GS),vice-general secretary (VGS), treasurer, vice-treasurer, among others.
Sources indicate that former Nam general secretary, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, would vie for the presidency.
She is reportedly leading a block consisting of Judith Chalusa [Vice President], Faggie Mwalweni (GS), former Malawi Netball Queens shooter, Linda Magombo- Munthali (VGS), Charity Malanga (Treasurer), and Tamara Fweta (Vice-Treasurer).
Apparently, it is only Nam’s incumbent General Secretary, Carol Bapu, who has openly declared interested in standing again for her position.
Southern Region Netball League Chairperson, Khungekile Matiya, has confirmed her interest but she is mum on the actual post.
Nam incumbent Vice-President, Chimwemwe Kachingwe and Vice-Treasurer, Jane Kachali, are yet to state if they will contest.
Meanwhile, another familiar face in netball, Charity Mhango, has confirmed her interest in the post of Vice-Treasurer.
“My involvement in netball for the past four years, through the sponsorship of Alliance Capital Stars, has awakened my interest in the sport.
“Through my experience working with various stakeholders in netball, I have come to realise that Nam plays an important role in the development of netball in Malawi. I want to be part of that contribution. The outgoing administration needs to be commended for bringing the team to where it is now,” she said.
Mhango said if elected, she would advocate for good governance in Nam.
“I also want to assist in fundraising and identifying other sources of income for the association. I will bring professionalism in financial management. My greatest target in the first year of office will be to publish audited financial accounts and maintain that trend for the rest of my tenure. To achieve this, I will develop financial management systems in all regions,” said the Masters Degree holder in economics from the University of Malawi (Chancellor College).
