Rumphi Police beat Corlaer College team from Nykerk in the Netherlands 3-2 in a nerve -wrecking friendly match played at Police Ground in Rumphi on Friday.
The ‘Malawi versus the Netherlands’ match started on a balanced note with both sides fighting for an early goal.
However, Netherlands’ Stan Gulliker scored first through a free-kick in the 20th minute.
Police equalised a few minutes later through Brave Gideon’s volley. The first half ended 1-1.
Some 10 minutes after resumption, Gullier robbed Police’s Mike Njikho of the ball in the penalty box and netted the Netherlanders’ second goal.
The visitors looked exhausted in the dying minutes and the police officers capitalised on the fatigue to grab an equaliser before netting the ultimate winner through Njikho and Davie Mkandawire in the 50th and 60th minutes, respectively.
In an interview, Teacher/ coach of the visiting team, Jonathan Muddle, said they decided to play the game while on an expedition in the country as a way of socialising.
After the game, the visitors presented 14 jerseys to the police officers.
The college team’s Project Leader, Yoop Van Delden, said the donation was in appreciation of the services which the police provides to the country.
Rumphi Police Officer– In-Charge, Senior Assistant Commissioner, Denis Banda, thanked the college students for the donation.
