The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) has a new magnificent 212-bed hostel for female students courtesy of the government of Norway.
Norway has pumped in K1.7 billion for the construction of the hostel which, according to officials, will see an increase in students’ intake.
Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Kikkan Haugen, who graced the official handover Thursday, said his government invested in the cause with an aim o f delivering secure accommodation to female students.
He said Norway prioritises education and the support is in line with its priority.
“Emphasis on education will continue to be one of our main priorities. We are confident that some girls we support from the primary schools will also enjoy this support,” he said.
Haugen further appealed to students not to vandalise the facility when in disagreements with the authorities.
On his part, Luanar Council Chairperson, Professor James Seyani, commended the support saying basic learning infrastructures are inadequate at the facility, hence the hostel will eradicate this challenge.
“While we have the basic teaching and learning infrastructure, it has now become inadequate with the increasing number of students. The construction of the hostel has definitely eased this problem,” he said.
Principal Secretary for Education, Science and Technology, Ken Ndala, who was the guest of honour at the handover ceremony, commended the Norwegian government for the support, saying it is timely and will improve delivery of education.
