The Lions Club of Blantyre will hold a fundraising golf tournament at Game Haven, Thyolo District on April 22.

Organiser, Tarang Makhecha, said they intend to fundraise for the construction of a girl’s hostel at Namikasi Day Secondary School at Lirangwe, Blantyre.

Makhecha said they had invited individuals and organisation to take part in the initiative. Registration for a team of two players is at K100,000.

“Namikasi Day Secondary School is a government school with an in-take of 40 girls per annum, hence an expected total enrolment of 160 girl students from Form One to Form Four per annum,” he said.

“There is an acute problem of accommodation at the school, which has forced some girls to stay in places not suitable and convenient for their personal development as well as for education. The lack of suitable accommodation at the school has resulted in many girl students being impregnated.”

Makhecha said the cost of the project was estimated at K75 million and Lions Club of Blantyre mother body, The Lions Club International, has challenged them to raise 25 percent.

“In return, they will finance the remaining 75 percent of the project. This fundraising drive is, therefore, targeted towards achieving the 25 percent cost of the project so that we can unlock funding from Lions Club International,” he said.

Last year, the Blantyre club also held a fundraising golf at the same venue when the Vice President, Saulos Chilima, graced the occasion.
