Top seed James Matewere has vowed to retain the General Alliance Squash tournament for the third successive time.
The three-day tournament got underway yesterday at Blantyre Sports Club.
Matewere warned fellow senior players, including top seed Aubrey Taulo and his elder brother, Julius, to expect a tough ride.
“I am not underrating my colleagues, but I am simply too good for them. I have to win this trophy for the third successive time,” he said.
Julius Taulo said he was determined to make up for his 2016 downfall when he was humbled in three straight sets.
“Let bygones be bygones. I have something special for him [Matewere]. I would love to meet him in the final so that he should feel what I felt when I lost,” he said.
Squash Malawi Publicity Secretary, Chiku Nkutumula, said the tournament has come at the right time as the association is preparing for international events.
“We will use the tournament to select the best players for the forthcoming international tournaments,” he said.
Over 40 players registered to compete in the tournament.
