Police in Bangwe on Wednesday intercepted 991 crates of Carlsberg Chill worth over K13 million which are suspected to have been stolen from Carlsberg Malawi.
Limbe Police spokesperson Pedzisai Zembeneko said the police intercepted the beer in the wee hours of Wednesday after they received a tip from well-wishers.
“The people wondered why a truck, registration number BR 9405, was offloading the beer at night at Tondole and Palinga bars. They tipped us and our officers, who were on duty that night, rushed to the scene and found the 991 crates beer,” he said.
Zembeneko said the police have since arrested six Carlsberg Malawi employees and owners of the two bars in connection with the theft.
He, however, could not disclose the identities of the suspects, saying doing so would jeopardise their investigations.
“The Carlsberg employees will answer the charge of theft by servant while the bottle stores’ owners will answer the charge of receiving stolen property,” he said.
Zembeneko thanked the general public for their support to the police in their work.
