Ex-Flames coach, Ernest Mtawali, has backed his former player, Isaac Kaliyati, to succeed at Cape Town City in the South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The former Azam Tigers playmaker has signed for the table-topping PSL side on a reported five-year deal as a free agent following the expiry of his two-year contract at Be Forward Wanderers.
And Mtawali believes moving to the PSL was just a matter of time for the midfielder he coached in the under-20 national team in 2014 and the Flames last year.
“He is a brilliant youngster, a versatile and intelligent player. He played for Azam Tigers before moving to Be Forward Wanderers,” Mtawali told South Africa football website, Kick Off, about the winger.
“He has been outstanding here at home in Malawi and he deserves the move to the PSL. I have no doubt that he will add value to Cape Town City and succeed in South Africa.”
City’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Julian Bailey, said their Coach, Eric Tinkler, rates Kaliyati highly.
“He is technically sound and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He just needs to work on his physique so that he can become strong,” Bailey said in a telephone interview from Cape Town on Friday.
In a statement, City also praised Kaliyati as a gem.
“At his young age‚ Isaac is already a feature in the Malawian national team alongside fellow PSL player Gabadinho Mhango‚” reads the statement in part.
“The elegant winger has incredible potential and under the guidance of the club‚ the management expect to see big things from the young man in the future.”
