Former president Joyce Banda’s running mate in the 2014 tripartite elections, Sosten Gwengwe, will contest for the parliamentary seat for Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency on a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) ticket following a landslide victory in primaries that were held yesterday.
Five aspirants contested and Gwengwe won with 559 votes out of the 575 votes.
In the elections, Stanley Chimphonda got one vote, Dzoole Mwale got two votes, Celix Dzuwa had two votes while Latson Kathewera won 11 votes.
MCP’s Director of Elections, Maxwell Thyolera said the results are testimony that people have chosen a person they want to represent them.
“This is the vote of the grassroots of MCP and they [people] have spoken through the votes and we can see that they have trust in Gwengwe. As a party, we wish him well as he has received good support from the grassroots,” he said.
Earlier, people of the constituency approached Gwengwe to contest as their Member of Parliament following the death of the area’s legislator, Highton Jiya in January.
