The Ministry of Health (MoH) has registered 14 cholera cases in the country this month.

MoH spokesperson, Adrian Chikumbe, said nine of the cases are of people from Mozambique while five cases have been registered in Traditional Authority Ndamera in Nsanje District.

The ministry’s records indicate that all the 14 cases were recorded between March 11 and 18. However, there have not been any new cases since March 19.

“As we are talking now, all the cases have been treated and the patients have been discharged from the hospitals. There have been no reports of deaths as a result of the outbreak,” Chikumbe said.

Meanwhile, the ministry is working with its partners in the districts to avoid the escalation of cholera cases,” Chikumbe said.

Chikumbe, however, said there was no need to panick as the ministry has been alert in response to possible outbreak of the disease. He said the ministry has been providing sanitary facilities and chemicals such as chlorine to people in cholera-prone districts.

“You will also remember that the ministry has been administering vaccines to people in Chikwawa and Nsanje that gives people five years of cholera immunity. So that has helped a lot in reducing the spread of the diseases,” he said.

Chikumbe further said the ministry has also put in place strict preventive measures in Machinga and Zomba after the two districts registered cholera cases last year.
