There was commotion at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) Wednesday afternoon as smoke billowed from a children’s ward at the facility.
According to an eyewitness, Julius Sibonga, most of the guardians moved out of the ward with their patients when a commotion ensued.
Sibonga said the smoke started from the kitchen and spread to the ward.
“Around 2pm, we heard people screaming and we rushed to the scene. The Electrical Supervisor went there and noted that the cause of the smoke was a short circuit at the main switch. The situation made people flee the ward,” he said.
When The Daily Times crew visited the hospital, people who were in the children’s ward had been evacuated, only empty beds could be seen.
Some guardians were seen making calls telling their relatives to come and pick them.
The hospital’s spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
This comes barely a few days after fire gutted part of Carlsberg Malawi’s brewery section at Makata Industrial Area in Blantyre destroying property worth millions of kwacha.
