Four more people have been arrested in connection to the fracas that ensued in Liwonde, Machinga District, on March 14 and 15 over the missing of a Form Four student, Faith Kasiya.
Machinga Police spokesperson, Davie Sulumba, said the four include Victor Mtuwa, whose house was torched during the fracas, and three others namely: Bamusi Mkwaila aged 37. Kameza Mtengela aged 55; and 38-year-old Peter Kalulu.
According to Sulumba, the four, who were arrested on March 18 and 17, face the charge of abduction with intention to murder.
During the fracas, 32 people were arrested and they are on remand at Domasi Prison.
Among the 32, two are facing the charge of arson, 27 have been charged with inciting violence while three have been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
“Mtuwa was the one suspected to have abducted the student and that it why the students of Mawira Private Secondary School targeted him and burnt his house. We took time to arrest him because we were conducting investigations,” he said.
Sulumba said Mtuwa has been remanded at Zomba Maximum Prison and will appear in court soon.
However, during the fracas, a woman, Georgina Maguza, is believed to have been shot as police were calming the situation.
According to Sulumba, the police are investigating the matter to establish if her injury was due to a gun shot.
“The situation was very hostile so we are investigating whether the woman in question was really shot or just got injured in the course of the chaos,” he said.
The woman, who is currently receiving treatment at Machinga District Hospital, was buying some merchandise at the market.
Mtuwa, the prime suspect in the alleged abduction, hails from Nkumba Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi District.
