There are days when everything goes according to plan.
Normally, a music group preparing for a performance maps out the performance— in terms of what type of instruments will be used, who will be playing what instrument, duration of the performance, who will be the first to go on stage, how to get to the stage, which song will be the first and the last, which dance moves will go with what song. Things of this nature.
Then, the band members have to sharpen the details by rehearsing, leaving nothing to chance. A band that does not do this takes its audience for granted and struggles to hold the audience’s attention.
This seems to be what Zembani Music Company did when it embarked on a three-day music tour of the Central Region.
Be it at Kay Club, Chinsapo 2, in Lilongwe Friday evening; Joe’s Motel in Mchinji Saturday evening; and Club Casualina in Area 25, Lilongwe, Sunday evening— everything seemed to fall into place.
The suspects were, as usual, familiar. Soldier Lucius Banda, Nepman, Sam Smack, Lambanie Dube and, of course, the Zembani Music dancers that have been working together for some time.
Nepman did not disappoint when he dished out ‘Nalero’, among other songs; just like Sam Smack, who did not disappoint when he performed ‘Bebina’ and the other tracks that have made him ride on the horse of public favour.
Dube did not disappoint either, taking the audience across the borders by faultlessly playing reggae cover songs, and then bringing the audience back to Malawi with his own tracks such as ‘Chisoni Nkumatenda’.
It was one of those occasions when what starts well ends well.
