Nasfest organisers announce 2017 calendar

Organisers of National Youth Arts Festival (Nasfest) have announced dates for next year’s festival.

The organisers, Light of Youth Creative Organisation (Lyco), said on Tuesday that preparations for the 2017 edition will begin this year.

“Nasfest 2018 edition will commence on October 28-29 in Eastern and Southern Region zones, November 5-6 in the Central Region Zone and on November 11 in the Northern Region Zone,” said Lyco Executive Director, James Kitchen.

However, Kitchen said the organisation would conduct several training sessions before the competition starts.

“Our organisation, through ‘Youth Creativity in Cultural Practices Project’, which is being funded by Hivos Foundation, will be holding and conducting training workshops, starting with Lilongwe on April 9 and Mzuzu on June 10 this year. The training is targeting 45 participants from each region.

“Among these participants, 15 are teachers, 18 are boys while 12 are girls. Lyco will train these youth in play writing and theatre making for the promotion of positive cultural practices,” Kitchen said.

The promotion of culture is in line with the Malawi Government’s policy. The government approved the National Cultural Policy in February 2015.

The goal of the cultural policy is to identify, preserve, protect and promote arts and culture for national identity.

Kitchen said it is after the training that the beneficiaries will go to their respective schools and write plays for Nasfest.

This year’s Nasfest was won by SOS Secondary School. Zingwangwa Secondary School came second while Lilongwe Girls Secondary School came third.
