Care distributes farm inputs

Care Malawi International, a humanitarian organisation under Ubale Project, distributed farm inputs to 460 households of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mbenje in Nsanje.

Speaking during the distribution ceremony, Agriculture Extension Development Coordinator for Magoti Extension Planning Area (EPA), which is under Shire Valley Agriculture Development Division (ADD), Frank Nakwanje, said following the reduction of the number of beneficiaries of the Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme (Fisp), some farmers have had a shortage of farm inputs.

He said the aim of the Ubale Project is to increase the income of vulnerable households in the country.

“The programme has assisted many people in the district so that those who did not get Fisp coupons have benefited a lot, especially with the system of winter cropping,” Nakwanje said.

According to Nakwanje, each person was receiving a coupon to buy hybrid maize seed, legume and vegetable seeds including tomato seeds, depending on the choice of the farmer.

Nakwanje said the project is also supporting some farmers with seed inputs through Diversity and Nutrition for Enhanced Resilience (DINER).

One of the beneficiaries, Evelyn Kadyerera, said she will be able to plant winter cropping along the river banks including the Shire River.

She said the gardens they used to cultivate, had little moisture content that affected their harvest.
