The General Assembly of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) has added its voice to calls for President Peter Mutharika’s administration to act on officials who allegedly were involved in corrupt practices.
The Assembly observes that Mutharika is shielding some suspected corrupt officials surrounding him, a development they say can lead to his downfall.
The Assembly’s leadership which consists of all five synods of Blantyre, Nkhoma and Livingstonia in Malawi, Harare and Lusaka in Zimbabwe and Zambia, respectively, is therefore seeking an audience with Mutharika over the matter.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Times Monday, CCAP General Secretary for the Assembly, Reverend Collin Mbawa said the synods will not watch the county sinking because of a few people surrounding Mutharika.
“It is sad that our President and his people are not taking issues of stewardship into account seriously. The people who have surrounded him are greedy. Malawians expected good leadership in terms of resource stewardship.”
“As General Assembly, we plan to meet him [Mutharika] and sympathise with him on the current developments that we believe are affecting Malawians negatively. We have realised that he is surrounded by people who are misleading him. It is sad that the people whom he trusted are suspected to be corrupt,” Mbawa said.
State House Press Officer, Mgeme Kalilani, however called the synod’s observation as an assumption that can only be entertained if put in writing.
“The President has never denied anyone an audience. However, people should understand that only serious matters can be entertained,” Kalilani said.
However, Reverend Mbawa said Malawians expect good governance and perfect management of resources and not arguments.
He said current cases of corruption signal that a lot of people in government need transformation through the gospel.
