Affiliates of Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) have finally been accorded the opportunity to exercise their powers in deciding who leads them for the next four years.
This comes after they failed to do so in November last year in Salima owing to various shortcomings which Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) observed.
The government sports policy implementation body raised questions on, among others, the eligibility of some of the delegates to the elective general assembly and asked AAM to call off the polls and work on the grey areas.
The association’s General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, said the shortcomings had been corrected in consultation with all stakeholders and the polls are going ahead today at Livingstonia Beach Hotel in Salima.
Chitembeya said to ensure free and fair polls, an independent body had been set up to preside over the elections with the supervision of MNCS.
“We have very credible people in the electoral body. They are led by a High Court Judge, Sylvester Kalembera. We learnt our lessons in the manner we used to conduct previous elections and we do not want to take any chances this time,” Chitembeya explained.
Incumbent AAM President, Godfrey Phiri, is set to retain his post unopposed.
But former AAM general secretary (GS), Haxon Chapasa, will contest for the Vice Presidency against Northern Region Athletics Committee (NRAC) Chairperson, Emmanuel Mulonya.
Malawi Schools Sports Association’s Blackson Malamula, is challenging incumbent Frank Chitembeya for the post of GS.
Competing for the position of Vice General Secretary are NRAC General Secretary, Thandi Mbeya and incumbent AAM Vice President, Senti Banda.
Incumbent AAM Treasurer, Irene Luka, faces the challenge of Southern Region Athletics Committee Chairperson, Christopher Kabwazi, for her position.
Contestants for the post of Vice Treasurer are Central Region Athletics Committee Chairperson, John Mwathiwa and SRAC’s Senki Kalowekamo.
