The Technical Entrepreneurship and Vocation Education Training Authority (Teveta) has called for more investments in skills development.
This comes against the background of high rate of unemployment among the youth.
Speaking during the opening of Misuku Community Skills Development Centre in Chitipa on Monday, Teveta Acting Executive Director, Wilson Makulumiza-Nkhoma, said technical skills have the potential to turn around Malawi’s economic status.
“We can change many people’s economic status if we start to take the programmes seriously. In our case, the skills development programmes that we are propagating are meant to enable youth earn a living” Nkhoma said.
He added that the skills learnt in various technical colleges and skills development centers will assist the government in improving the economy.
“If you give skills to the youth, they will be able to develop rural areas like Misuku and the nation will also grow economically” Nkhoma added.
District Commissioner for Chitipa, Grace Chirwa, said the skills development centre that has been opened at Misuku will assist communities in the area.
“The school will help fill the gap we had in skills development. Misuku is located 40 kilometers from Chitipa Boma and it was very difficult for the community to travel that long distance to access trainings” Chirwa said.
In his remarks, Traditional Authority, Mwenemisuku, said he will ensure that the community benefits from the project.
The Centre will be courses in carpentry, joinery, bricklaying, fabrication, welding, tailoring and fashion design, among others.
