Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), has set aside K50 million for corporate social responsibility activities.
The company will target both the country’s health and education sectors, according to Chief Executive Officer Enwell Kadango.
Kadango disclosed this at the weekend, when PIL donated various medical equipment worth K5 million to Chikwawa District Hospital.
Officials at the facility have been complaining of shortage of medical equipment.
“As a company that is operating within the country, we are interested in the well being of the people, so we decided to donate the medical equipment as part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) plan for this year and Chikwawa District Hospital becomes our first point of call in this endeavour,” Kadango said.
He expressed hope that the donation which includes, heavy duty aprons and gloves, clogs, digital thermometers, BP machines and a vacuum extractor, among others, will help in improving the district’s health service delivery system.
“The health sector including the country’s education sector need serious attention and it is our hope that this equipment will bring that needed change to the sector so much so that many people will now have access to quality healthy services,” He said.
Speaking earlier on, Chikwawa District Commissioner Fred Movete cited underfunding as a major challenge to Chikwawa District Hospital and others.
“We are really facing various challenges but limited funding is one of the most critical [problems] as we are operating with very minimal funds as Treasury trims almost each and every budget we send to them as a council a development which is affecting service delivery at local government level,” he said.
Last year, PIL targeted Community Day Secondary schools across the country with donations of desks through its corporate social responsibility initiative.
