Government embarks on headcount of pensioners

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development is conducting a head count of all pensioners to verify and clean up data on pensioners.

Spokesperson in the Ministry, Alfred Kutengule, has confirmed the development describing it as a normal exercise.

“The aim of the exercise is to have clean data on pensioners so that payment of pension is made to the legitimate pensioners,” he said.

As of December, all districts except Mwanza, Neno, Ntcheu, Dedza, Mchinji and Likoma were already covered.

According to Kutengule, about K50 billion is spent to pay pensioners per year, “but this varies every year depending on the number of people retiring from government”

National Audit Office carried out a similar exercise in 2015 in order to flush out ghost civil servants.
