Limbani Lano proved to be the king of the ring on Saturday when he handed McDad Thipa Phiri his first defeat in a semi-professional heavy weight bout at New Nkhwanzi Lodge in Chigumula Township, Blantyre.
Lano defeated Phiri in the fourth round through a technical knockout.
It was a bout of contrasting styles as Phiri opted for power while Lano deployed technique and power.
After the win, Lano was all smiles.
“It was not an easy fight but I just thank God for the win. It was not through my power that I was able to defeat my counterpart. He came flat-out to knock me down,” said Lano, who improved his record to 20 wins and two losses while Phiri has lost once in 19 bouts.
Host Prince Chisese, Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) vice-General Secretary for the Southern Region, said despite the low turnout, the bout was a success.
In the other bouts on the day, Euma Matoga defeated Mphatso Mateuza on points and Hannock Phiri beat Wyson Dick through a knockout in round three.
