MCP welcomes 250 defectors

Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Regional Committee for the North, on Saturday welcomed 250 defectors from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Party (PP) and United Democratic Front (UDF).

The defectors were holding various positions at district and constituency levels in their former parties in Mzuzu City.

Speaking during a rally held in Lubinga Township, Deputy Regional Chairperson, Gracious Soko, said the new members symbolise confidence people have in the party President Lazarus Chakwera.

Soko said the party is also receiving more people who were not holding any positions in their parties through area committees in the six districts in the North.

“MCP is the only party that has real democracy in the country. People have realised this during our recent district elections held in the past two months. Positions were not given to us but people voted. This is what differentiates MCP from other parties,” Soko said.

“We are recruiting people into MCP on daily basis and this will help us to win 2019 elections smoothly without complaints from the majority of the Malawians. The people’s only hope is in MCP and the leadership of Dr Lazarus Chakwera,” Soko added.

He, therefore, said the regional committee, understands the four cornerstones of Unity, Loyalty, Obedience and Discipline that guide them in their operations at the grassroots.

“People in rural areas want Malawi back to the old good days when the citizens were loyal to their leader, discipline in the community and working in unity to develop their own country. Now all of this is gone and that is why the country has lost its direction,” Soko argued.

Mzuzu City District Chairman, Joseph Chavula, said many people are joining MCP because they have lost trust in the current administration.
