Carlsberg Malawi Limited last week donated 10 mattresses worth about K800,000 to the Oncology Ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech) in Blantyre.
Carlsberg Malawi Marketing Director, Gwynyth Mchiela, said the company realises the importance of the facility in the fight against cancer in children, hence the continued support.
“The ward is serving so many Malawians, and the people that are admitted to this ward are at one point or the other a consumer of our products. So, we will continue supporting the ward,” pledged Mchiela.
In his remarks, Head of Paediatric Oncology at the facility, Dr George Chagaluka, said the 25-bed ward now has more than 30 children and that more are coming for treatment.
Chagaluka attributed the high demand for oncology services at the hospital to increased awareness of childhood cancer being curable.
“We are thanking Carlsberg for the donation of mattresses because it will relieve a lot of pressure on space as well as bed capacity that we have,” Chagaluka said.
Southern Bottlers adopted the Oncology Ward over 20 years ago and the company provides its Sobo squash to the patients daily.
