President Peter Mutharika has appointed, Nyakwawa Usiwausiwa as Judge of the High Court.
According to a statement signed by Chief Secretary to the Government, George Mkondiwa, dated December 14, 2016, the appointment has been in exercise of the powers conferred upon President Mutharika under Section 111 sub- Section 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.
Judiciary Spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula, confirmed the appointment describing it as timely to help reduce the backlog of cases at the High Court.
“The appointment is significant to the Judiciary and the nation at large. Some judges of the High Court passed on while in office and some retired. This created a gap and the appointment will help in the administration of justice at the High Court,” Mvula said.
Usiwausiwa has served as Magistrate, Resident Magistrate, Chief Resident Magistrate and Deputy Registrar of the High Court and the Supreme Court of Malawi before being appointed as High Court Judge.
Usiwausiwa grabbed international attention in his landmark ruling where he sentenced a gay couple of Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour on December 10, 2010.
