Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, will this Saturday seek re-election as executive committee member of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa).
Nyamilandu, who arrived in South Africa’s North West Province on Tuesday ahead of the elections scheduled for Sun City, confirmed that he wants to retain his executive committee membership.
However, all eyes are on the presidency which has attracted nominations of incumbent Suketu Patel of the Seychelles, South African Football Association President, Danny Jordaan, and Zimbabwe Football Association boss Philip Chiyangwa.
Jordaan, who was Chief Executive of the organising committee of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa, made a rare appearance to witness South Africa thrash Lesotho 8-0 at the start of the Cosafa Youth Championship at Moruleng Stadium on December 7.
The real battle might be between Patel and Jordan with Chiyangwa seen as a rank-outsider.
The elections will be the main feature at Cosafa’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), the regional soccer-governing body said in a statement.
“Elections will be held to decide the positions of President, Vice-President and the Executive Committee,” reads the statement in part.
“Three nominations for the position of President were received prior to the November 2 [2016] deadline.”
There are also three nominees for the position of Vice-President- Advocate Salemane Phafane from Lesotho, Frans Mbidi of Namibia and Chiyangwa.
Other officials eyeing Cosafa executive committee membership are Pedro Neto (Angola), Mclean Letshwidi (Botswana), David Fani (Botswana), Sameer Sobha (Mauritius), Alberto Simanga (Mozambique), John Muinjo (Namibia), Timothy Shongwe (Swaziland) and Andrew Kamanga (Zambia).
