The state on Tuesday asked the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe for 21 days to liaise with the Rwandan Government on the extradition of Vincent Murekezi.
Murekezi is wanted by the Rwandan Government for being implicated in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide in which about one million died in 100 days. He was tried and convicted in absentia for his role in the genocide.
Murekezi, who has two Malawian passports under two different names, was arrested last week by the police following outstanding requests for his extradition by the Rwandan Government and a protest by some concerned Malawians.
On Tuesday, he appeared before the magistrate court in Lilongwe to start the extradition proceedings, but Senior Assistant Chief State Advocate Steve Kayuni asked the court for 21 days for the government of Malawi to liaise with Rwanda on the case
