The Blantyre First Grade Magistrate’s Court has found two Blantyre City Council Rangers, Innocent Maluwa and Macford Majonga, with a case to answer for allegedly wounding Robert Moyo, a newspaper vendor in the city.
The two allegedly assaulted Moyo because he was washing a vehicle in the city which they argued is contrary to the city’s by-laws.
At the court, Moyo, who was wearing a T-shirt with the message “Poverty is not a crime,” was accompanied by his relatives and Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (Chreaa) officers who are assisting him in the case.
Delivering his ruling, First Grade Magistrate, Ibrahim Hussein, said Maluwa and Majonga have been charged for unlawfully wounding Moyo.
After the ruling, a visibly happy Moyo said he had hope that justice would prevail.
“I am very happy with the ruling. It shows that maybe I will receive justice. I have been wondering whether I was just assaulted in vain. I want the case to proceed as quickly as possible,” he said.
The accused will take plea on November 28.
Moyo was allegedly assaulted by the rangers on July19 2016 and lost three teeth.
