Gift Kalosi, 22, on Monday committed suicide in Nsanje after he was implicated in the theft of farm produce belonging to his mother, Nsanje Police spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma, said in an interview.

According to Zalakoma, the deceased’s mother, Mary Kalosi, who sells beans and rice at Nsanje Market, had long complained about the theft of her produce which she claimed usually occurred in her absence.

“She suspected that her son, Gift, and his friend, Rafa Love, were behind the thefts. As such, [last week] she dragged Rafa before Village Headman Nthole where he confessed to have been given a duplicate key by the deceased to gain entry into the house and steal the produce,” Zalakoma said.

She further said Nthole adjourned the case to Monday to have Gift summoned and authenticate Rafa’s claims.

“On said day, however, Gift was found hanging from the roof of the storeroom,” Zalakoma added.

An autopsy conducted at Nsanje District Hospital revealed that Gift had died to strangulation.

He came from Sayenda Village in Traditional Authority Mthiramanja in Mulanje.
