Airtel National Volleyball Trophy champions, Kamuzu Barracks (KB), have
commenced preparations for this year’s Zone Six Volleyball Club Championship scheduled for December in Swakopmund, Namibia.
Team Manager, Lutufyo Kayange, said his team was aiming for an improved showing after an embarrassing display last year in Swaziland, where the soldiers lost all their matches.
“We learnt quite a lot in Manzini. When we returned home, we rectified all our mistakes. I can confidently state here that we are a much better team now,” Kayange explained.
He said the team was targeting a quarterfinal finish in Namibia.
Kayange noted that young players have been blended with their experienced counterparts.
“The other reason for our poor performance last year was because we did not have enough time for preparations. We now have the time to prepare. Come December, we will be up there with the best,” he challenged.
KB won the K2.5 million Airtel Trophy after registering a 3-0 victory over bitter rivals, Lilongwe Spikers, in August.
Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, commended the soldiers for committing to represent the country again at the tournament.
He said there was need for various sectors in the country to give the team moral and financial support.
“Other teams are also free to make the trip. It should not just be Kamuzu Barracks. We need more players to be exposed to the international game. That is how we can develop volleyball in the country,” Nkhoma observed.
This year’s event commences on December 10 and will have indoor and beach categories with male and female players competing.
